Questions

How can I find Planet Rock?

A reader emails to ask how they can find digital rock music radio station Planet Rock.

Planet Rock is one of the UK’s longest-running digital radio stations, playing classic and modern rock. The station was threatened with closure in 2008 before being purchased by a consortium including Gary Moore and Fish and was sold again in 2013.

The current line-up includes Alice Cooper, Paul Anthony and Murray J. Former musicians to host shows have included Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and Rick Wakeman (Yes).

DAB Digital Radio

Planet Rock can be found on DAB digital radio in most of the UK. However, the station recently moved to a different network of transmitters which reach a smaller percentage of the population.

If you have Planet Rock in your list of stations but no sound, or the radio display shows ‘no service’ or similar, it could be your radio is still looking for the station on the old transmitters. Performing a retune should find the station again.

If your digital radio also does not find talkRADIO, Virgin Radio or Mellow Magic it could be that the signal for this group of stations is not strong enough in your location.

The station was formerly available in the West Midlands on FM. This frequency is now used by Absolute Radio.

Online and in apps

It’s possible to listen to the station online at the Planet Rock website and on the UK Radioplayer website.

The station has its own iOS and Android apps, available in the App Store and Google Play store. It can also be found in the UK Radioplayer app, TuneIn and on internet enabled radios.

Sky, Virgin and Freesat

Planet Rock can be found on Sky (channel 0110), Virgin Media (channel 924) and Freesat (channel 730). The station is not available on Freeview.

Users of free-to-air satellite receivers can also find the station on Astra 2 as it is not encrypted.
