Updated cars come with digital radio

More than eight out of 10 new cars sold in 2016 came with DAB digital radio as standard.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) reports that 2.28 million cars took to roads with the kit included as standard. It marks the first time that the 2 million mark has been passed, in a year when a record number of new cars were registered in the UK.

“With increasing numbers of DAB-enabled vehicle models on the market, and new car registrations at record levels, more car owners than ever before are now able to tune into digital radio as they drive,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive.

In four years the number of cars with DAB fitted as standard has increased from 26.4% to 84.5%. The majority of cars on UK roads currently don’t have digital radio. The SMMT expects that the announcement of a switchover date would accelerate the adoption of digital radio in older cars.
